Popuphood is a new urban initiative offering six new retail shops in five previously vacant store fronts with six months free rent. Through popuphood, a dynamic neighborhood is
created where folks can stroll, dine, drink and shop, while exploring the neighborhood, discovering its historic charm and investing locally. The sixth retail concept is a furniture
shop in a finished 20’ shipping container situated in the parking lot. Each local small
business was curated by popuphood to compliment the already thriving restaurants and
bars and benefit them by increasing the neighborhood profile to position Old Oakland as

Tom Betthauser was born and raised in the Bay Area, where he graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute. He's currently finishing a MFA at Yale. His surreal, finely-detailed landscapes display impressive technique and a radical imagination. His art brings to mind the landscapes of Thomas Cole, the detailed scenes of George Catlin, and the fractured graphic impulses of M.C. Escher. Let's hope he comes back to the Bay Area after graduation. We could always use more talent on the home team.

This fall is the release of "Urbanized", the newest documentary by Gary Hustwit. It is the last in his design trilogy that included the movies "Helvetica" and "Objectified". I have rarely anticipated a documentary as much as this. Check out the movie's website to find out when you can see it in your neck of the woods. For those of you in the bay area it will be screening at Yerba Beuena Center for the Arts in November along with the other movies in the design series. I have already reserved my tickets.

Amazon is serious about winning the e-reader and tablet wars. What's their secret weapon? Cost. Today they introduced their updated Kindle line at a price point that significantly undercuts the competition. $79 for the entry-level Kindle, $99 for the Kindle Touch ($149 for the 3G model), and $199 for the Kindle Fire. The new entry-level Kindle slims down its footprint by losing the previous model's physical keyboard. The Kindle Touch should have Barnes and Noble's Nook shaking in its boots. But the real news is the Kindle Fire. The Fire features a dual-core processor, 8GB of storage, and Amazon Silk, a mobile-optimized browser that plays Flash content. The Kindle Fire's UX design is clearly influenced by Apple's category-defining iPad and lacks much of the iPad's features and functionality. However, the fact that the Kindle Fire costs $199 and leverages Amazon's extensive cloud capabilities, means that Apple finally has some serious competition for Post-PC dominance.

This weekend is the first weekend of Open Studios in San Francisco. This weekend features studios in the Mission, Noe Valley, Bernal Heights, Castro, Excelsior.
SF Open Studios is free, self-guided and takes place every weekend October 1-30, 2011 from 11 am to 6 pm. Each weekend features artists in different neighborhoods. To assist in planning studio visits, the public is invited to learn about the participating artists at artspan.org or by picking up the free SF Open Studios Guide, complete with thumbnail reproductions, contact information, and map locations, available at SOMArts Cultural Center at 934 Brannan St. during regular gallery hours throughout October. Their “clever little bag” uses 65% less cardboard than the standard shoe box. It has no laminated printing, no tissue paper, and significantly reduces Puma's worldwide carbon footprint.

Puma's "clever little bag" is a win for the environment. It's also an impressive win for the brand. The case study video features elegant motion graphics and writing that sells the idea with a set of convincing environmental metrics. The "clever little bag" is a state-of-the-art example of how to create online goodwill. The case study video alone has created hundreds of thousands of positive brand impressions. It's great to see innovative, strategic ideas implemented with such style. Advertising agencies should take note. This is what a successful, modern ad campaign will look like in 2012.

The Secret State examines civilization’s long romance with the examination of the space that we inhabit and our scale within it; the exhibition itself is aimed not at providing any comprehension of our universe’s truths, but instead, at celebrating the joy of discovering new clues to their elaborate puzzles and the spaces between. Large and small works present a think tank of characters; a seer, a scientist/naturualist, an astronomer, and a doctor/engineer all bravely led by Alexander the Great and a shape-shifting machine. This solo exhibition includes the largest works of Tunstall’s career, some archaic drawing methods, some site-specific installations, and a reinterpretation of the Eames’ classic power of 10. Join us at 111 Minna in exploring our greatest human powers: curiosity and imagination; where freckles become entire star systems and seemingly empty spaces become maps to constellations of atoms.

NPR is streaming Bon Iver's recent concert, the second of two sold-out performances at Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club, recorded August 2. Bon Iver finds a good balance of new material from its excellent album, Bon Iver, and classic cuts from 2008's For Emma, Forever Ago. There's even a cover of Bjork's "Who Is It." The nine-member band assembled for this tour, includes two drummers and a horn section featuring bass saxophonist Colin Stetson. Check it out here.

I'm late to the game on this one. I couple of months ago I was walking down the street in the Mission District in San Francisco and walked past The Thing. It was filled with boxes that simply said, "The Thing Issue 14 James Franco". Now I'm not a huge fan of James Franco nor am I someone that has a large amount of disdain for the man. I am in awe of his ability to take on so much at once but that's about the end of my feelings. I thought the space looked really cool but was perplexed by all the James Franco boxes. Until today. I finally looked up what that little storefront on 20th St is really about. My jaw dropped and if I was drinking something I would have done a spit take.

The Thing Quartely is according to their website "a periodical in the form of an object. It's like a magazine, except that each issue is conceived of by a different contributor and then published on a useful object."

Go check it out yourself. I am in LOVE with this idea.

Federico Saenz-Recio's paintings mix instinctive, gestural doodles with a sophisticated sense of design. His work echos the best of the New York Action Painters from the 1950s. Next week my buddies at Spoke Art present Quentin vs. Coen at Bold Hype Gallery in New York. From their press release:

The first installment of our “versus” series, “Quentin vs Coen” looks to expand on the concept of a pop-culture themed art show by pitting together two directors who share overlapping or similar stylistic themes, and allowing the viewer to decide their favorites. Though there are many distinct differences between the bodies of work created by both Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers, their crafting of generation-defining soundtracks, the penchant for ubiquitous violence, their casting of the same actors (notably Steve Buscemi), and their ability to constantly create spectacular works of varying genres (everything from Kung-Fu to crime dramas to westerns), have cemented both Quentin and the Coens as some of the most important directors of our generation.

The opening is Thursday April 7th and will run through May 7th. Don't miss this one, it's going to be fantastic.

Tadanori Yokoo and thoughts of Japan

It's difficult to express my personal feelings surrounding what happened and the current crisis in Japan. I've never been yet it holds a special place in my heart. The feeling I have of Japan is one of romanticism found through art, movies, and design. I know I'm not alone in this feeling and that I'm not the first westerner to dream of the beauty that is Japan and all things Japanese. I morn for them, I feel a dull ache in my chest and my jaw clenches.

With that in mind I have always tried to be the optimist. People are strong, Japan has rebuilt itself before. A few years ago I came across the artist/graphic designer Tadanori Yokoo. As a child he saw the bombs the US dropped on his country. His work evolved as Japan evolved into modernity. If you're looking for something inspiring in the destruction check out his work. I keep coming back to it in the recent weeks. It gives me hope.

This Friday Dusty Modern presents "First Sensation - Post-War Prints from the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism."

According to our friends at Dusty Modern, the show consists primarily of lithographs from a 1948 print portfolio titled "Drawings." It includes work by James Budd Dixon, John Hultberg, Walter Kuhlman, and Frank Lobdell. The prints are from the golden age of S.F. Abstract Expressionism, created by some of its greatest artists.

MK Gallery is putting a very special benefit exhibition together for artist Jayme Odgers. The exhibition will run for one week only from February 19th to February 26th presented by Launch Projects, with support from Merry Karnowsky Gallery.

Jayme suffered a stroke in January, which has affected his ability to swallow, speak, and work.

The paintings and works on paper being presented are from the artist’s personal holdings and will be offered at 50% of retail prices. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the artist to assist with much needed medical costs and other related expenses. If you are a regular reader of this blog then you probably already know of my love for Health Ceramics and mid-century design. Adam Silverman is a potter that lives in LA and works with Heath (running their LA storefront). His newest project called Reverse Archaeology hits close to home for me. Here's the idea as explained by Heath:

"The traditional country potter worked by setting up his studio near a clay deposit and making pots from that clay. As you might imagine, different areas offer up different clay, and these differences cannot help but inform the end result, the finished pot.
Reverse Archaeology proposes a cultural version of this—to harvest materials from a culturally significant site and imbue the work with that significance."

Silverman is an architecture student turned potter who found inspiration in Fort Worth, TX (my hometown). Again I'll let Heath do the explaining:

"(for) Adam Silverman, there is probably no more culturally significant site to gather materials from than the area of Forth Worth, Texas where architects Renzo Piano and Tadao Ando come face to face with the legendary Louis Kahn—specifically, in the form of Kahn’s Kimbell Art Museum, Ando’s Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and Piano’s just-begun addition to the Kimbell."

I wrote a post last month chronicling the importance of this area and am truly inspired that Silverman will be working in Fort Worth to add and give more notice to the cultural significance of this place. He will continue the project through the completion of the Kimbell addition. In the mean time check out the Reverse Archaeology blog here.

Ryan Mrozowski's recent paintings feature a fight deep in a forest, a vast black dog, a man with moths sprouting from his hands, and a sharpshooter pushing his luck. It’s wonderfully ambiguous work.

His muted colors and refined sense of composition make a compelling match for his surreal intentions. Imagine Edward Hopper interpreting Marc Chagall. It's unexpected and exhilarating.

Mrozowski is represented by the community-minded Pierogi Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. Keep an eye on him. He’s a good reminder that not all the interesting painting is happening in the streets.
