The Thing - Quarterly
I'm late to the game on this one. I couple of months ago I was walking down the street in the Mission District in San Francisco and walked past The Thing. It was filled with boxes that simply said, "The Thing Issue 14 James Franco". Now I'm not a huge fan of James Franco nor am I someone that has a large amount of disdain for the man. I am in awe of his ability to take on so much at once but that's about the end of my feelings. I thought the space looked really cool but was perplexed by all the James Franco boxes. Until today. I finally looked up what that little storefront on 20th St is really about. My jaw dropped and if I was drinking something I would have done a spit take.
The Thing Quartely is according to their website "a periodical in the form of an object. It's like a magazine, except that each issue is conceived of by a different contributor and then published on a useful object."
Go check it out yourself. I am in LOVE with this idea.
Their current subscription cycle includes the following:
Issue 14: JAMES FRANCO
Issue 15: MACFADDEN & THORPE
Issue 16: DAVE EGGERS
Issue 17: SHANNON EBNER

Federico Saenz-Recio's paintings mix instinctive, gestural doodles with a sophisticated sense of design. His work echos the best of the New York Action Painters from the 1950s. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. It will be interesting to watch his career progress. It seems that abstract expressionism can still be a vital source of inspiration.

James Marshall and Greg Lamarche at Show & Tell Gallery
Both James Marshall (Dalek) and Greg Lamarche are artists that speak to the core of what I love in art and design. Geometric Balance opens next week at Show & Tell Gallery in Toronto. This show in particular makes me dream of a day when I am independently wealthy and can travel the world checking out art. A girl can dream. If you can make it you should, send me photos, I'll be jealous.

I've been back in research and inspiration mode lately. To that end I came across a great site called Gurafiku: Japanese Graphic Design curated by graphic designer Ryan Hageman. Above are a few of my favorites.
